About 25 years ago I studied Feng Shui with a local teacher. I learned a lot about how energy moves through spaces. It was a Western form of Feng shui called the Black Hat School where they believe that energy enters your home through the front door. As energy circulates through your home it impacts different aspects of your life. It’s like tai chi for your home. You do something on the physical level and the effects create change on the energetic level.
At the time I had a successful handmade art card business. Through my studies I learned that the far left hand corner of my home was the “wealth & prosperity” section. There was a small crack in the bottom corner of a single pain window in our 1914 heritage house. Cracked windows fall into the category of bad feng shui. We hadn’t paid much attention to the crack as the small back room functioned as a TV watching spot where my daughter and friends watched movies and I got my dose of Home and Garden TV. After I learned about it’s potential impact I had the window replaced. The very same day I received the largest single order for cards I’d ever had from a Canadian public art gallery shop. That was the moment when theory became reality and I thought wow, this really works.
Many aspects of Feng shui feel a lot like common sense. Messy, cluttered spaces with broken things contribute to stagnant energy. Not that surprising, right? You’ve probably sensed that feeling in your own home or someone else’s.
Maybe you have a pile of unread books or papers on your desk, a plant on a window ledge that has died or a dusty corner with a tangle of computer cords? Taking care of those things are a simple energy adjustments in feng shui.
Surroundings that are clean, bright and well cared for promote energy flow. Filling you home with beautiful things that you love creates good feng shui. Furniture placed in a way that you can easily move around promotes pathways for energy flow. Beautiful, well placed art also enhances feng shui. Different subject matter and color themes support different parts of your home and aspects of your life.
With the advent of Spring, the season of rebirth and renewal I have found myself feeling the pull to declutter and do some spring cleaning. Some ancient right and ritual of throwing open the curtains and beating the carpets has kicked in. I love tidying. It refreshes a space. As the nature outside my door comes alive I do too.
An easy Feng Shui trick for you to try
And there is a little fun and easy feng shui trick I want to share with you. Perhaps things are feeling a little stagnant in your life or home? Maybe you’d like to try a little feng shui experiment?. If you move 27 things in your home, that will break up energy stagnation. Simply relocate decor items, plants, furniture, artwork, really anything you choose. Items can simply swap places or have a time out in drawers and cupboards. Do it all at once. And then watch to see what happens in your world.
I’d love to hear if anything in your home or life changes if you try this. It could be something big like my card order or something small like all of a sudden you feel more energetic.
And if your space needs a little something to brighten and enliven it, feel free to visit my gallery and find something that calls to you. There are inexpensive paper pieces as well as larger works on canvas.
