Summer has disappeared in the review mirror as I write. I could say it should get a speeding ticket because it went by way too fast. But I won’t say that because it sounds pretty corny, right?
I spent my summer soaking up all the sun I could and topping my vitamin D supply for the winter. At least that’s my story. All that time outside was a great time for pondering and reimagining my work.
Generally when I go into the studio I just paint. I don’t have plans or maps of what should happen. My work evolves in twists and turns. I choose colours that suit my mood and gravitate to colours that lie outside my window. Shapes emerge on the canvas and there are basic ones that are part of my painting vocabulary. It can be a roundabout way to work but I find it meditative, soothing and satisfying. I know when a painting is done (or not done).

But this summer I set a couple of intentions for myself. I would move to a lighter palette and I would paint an interrelated group of paintings where the paintings were connected to each other in some way. When I started out I didn’t really know what that would mean other than I would hopefully emerge with a small collection of paintings. Sometimes it’s just good to shake things up.
The collection is up on the website and you are the first to see it! I think it reflects my intentions and the spirit of a beautifully warm summer.
The series is called “While You Were Dreaming” and the name was inspired by a couple of things. An artist friend called a couple of the paintings “dreamy”. That was so interesting to me as the music I accidentally listened to while I painted was Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” That comment felt very synchronistic when I considered the audio track for the paintings. I agreed with him that these paintings had a slightly dreamy, otherworldly feel in the way the paint was applied and just their overall feel.
So here it is. Have a peek. Canvas work is here. And there are 2 works on paper here. All are available at this point. Let me know what you think if you feel so inclined.
